Fairmont Banff Springs: 6 Reasons to Stay in this Iconic Hotel on Your Banff National Park Trip
Fairmont Banff Springs is the most iconic hotel in Banff, and maybe even all of Canada! Often referred to as the “Castle in the Rockies,” this hotel is one you have to add to your travel bucket list. Staying there is an experience all its own! Below are the reasons you need to book a stay at Fairmont Banff Springs on your next trip to Banff National Park!
TIP: Visit Surprise Corner Viewpoint across the river from the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel to get the iconic, picture-perfect view of the hotel!
1. Breathtaking location
If you want to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Banff National Park, Fairmont Banff Springs is the perfect place for it! The hotel is surrounded by towering mountains, lush forests, and pristine lakes. When you stay there, nature is right at your doorstep! And if you book a room with a view (we highly recommend doing so), you can enjoy the surrounding landscape from the comfort of your bed. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?
The hotel is only a 15-minute walk and even a shorter bus ride from downtown Banff. Parking in Banff in the summer can be a nightmare, so not needing to drive was very convenient.
TIP: Make sure to ask for bus tickets at the reception. Fairmont Banff Springs provides them to guests free of charge.
2. Architectural icon
Fairmont Banff Springs’ stunning architecture is a testament to its rich history. It was given the ‘Castle in the Rockies’ nickname for a reason. Built in the late 19th century, the hotel exudes a grandeur reminiscent of a European castle. The moment you step inside, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported into a Disney fairytale! Both the exterior and interior of the hotel are elegant and timeless.
3. The rich history
Fairmont Banff Springs has a long history, going back over a hundred years. It all started in 1888 when the hotel opened as a fancy stop for those traveling across Canada by train. People from all over, including royalty and other famous personalities, started coming to see the hotel and to enjoy the majestic Canadian Rockies.
Staying at Fairmont Banff Springs is almost like staying at a museum. We recommend booking a complimentary history tour with a knowledgeable guide. You’ll hear stories about ghosts and many other interesting things that happened over the hotel’s history.
TIP: The hotel is huge and can be difficult to navigate. Book a free guided hotel tour at the beginning of your stay to familiarize yourself with the property. Bonus point – you’ll learn some interesting facts about the hotel’s history and architectural design.
4. Lots to do
Fairmont Banff Springs is not just a hotel, it’s a world-class resort that offers an abundance of activities and services. You can easily spend 2-3 days without leaving the property and not even begin to feel bored!
Here are just some of the activities you can do while staying at Fairmont Banff Springs:
- Go for a bike ride. Rent a regular bike (the first hour is free) or an e-bike!

5. Pool & spa
Fairmont Banff Springs’ 40,000-square-foot spa deserves a separate mention on this list! With three waterfall treatment whirlpools, a stunning indoor mineral pool, an outdoor whirlpool, and various treatments ranging from facials to massages and salon services, Willow Stream Spa is a true sanctuary for those looking to relax and pamper themselves. There is just something so magical about soaking in the outdoor hot tub while listening to birds chirping and being surrounded by mountain peaks!
6. Dining options
Fairmont Banff Springs is heaven for foodies! With 12 dining options onsite, ranging from casual cafes to acclaimed restaurants and bars, there is truly something for every taste.
Rundle Bar
Rundle Bar was originally the hotel’s lobby but has been transformed into one of the most beautiful bars we’ve seen, with a stylish and timeless interior. The bar serves hand-crafted cocktails and a seasonally-inspired all-day menu. Our favorite part about this bar was its speakeasy lounge with a hidden entrance behind a floor-to-ceiling bookcase. Rundle Bar is one of the best bars in Banff – worth a visit whether you’re a hotel guest or not!
Afternoon tea
Afternoon tea at Fairmont Banff Springs is a must-do for anyone who appreciates this culinary tradition. Not only will you enjoy classic scones, house-made jams, delicious finger sandwiches, and pastries, but you’ll also be treated to magnificent views. Make sure to snag a window table!
Waldhaus Restaurant
Waldhaus Restaurant – a Bavarian-style restaurant located in a cozy cottage perched above the Bow and Spray rivers, about a 10-minute stroll from the main building. If you’re craving alpine cuisine, you have to visit Waldhaus Restaurant! We recommend getting the Waldhaus Fondue Experience which includes classic cheese fondue, chocolate fondue, and a choice of entrée. This was such a special meal!
The Vermillion Room
The Vermillion Room – the main restaurant at Fairmont Banff Springs serving breakfast, brunch, and dinner. It’s a classic brasserie serving French cuisine with a Canadian twist. We were only able to visit The Vermillion Room for breakfast where you have a choice between the breakfast buffet and a la carte.
STOCK Food and Drink
STOCK Food and Drink is a casual market/cafe where you can have a quick bite to eat or a cup of coffee. It’s a great spot for grabbing some sandwiches and coffee to go for hikes and picnics.
