Where to stay in San Francisco: San Francisco Proper Hotel
When I started planning our first trip to San Francisco, I knew we had to stay at Proper Hotel for at least a couple of nights! I had been saving Instagram photos from this gorgeous property for so long. San Francisco Proper is the perfect place to stay for anyone who loves interior design and attention to detail as much as I do! Here is a quick recap of my stay and everything you need to know before booking your own stay.
Location
One of the city’s most historic buildings, this flatiron landmark looks timeless on the outside and hip and artsy on the inside. The hotel is centrally located, making it very easy to explore different parts of the city during your stay. It’s only a 30-minute train or Uber ride from the airport. You can walk to a lot of restaurants and attractions.
Design
In 2017, San Francisco Proper opened as the first of five Proper Hotels. Kelly Wearstler decorated the hotel interior, which features lots of colorful, vintage furniture, mismatched pieces of art, and unique decorative objects. I just love it when history blends with modern elements of design. Every single corner of this hotel grabs your attention and asks to be photographed!
Rooms
Just like the rest of the San Francisco Proper Hotel, the guest rooms are beautiful and have interesting design elements, such as vintage floral wallpaper, unique lighting fixtures, and modern furniture. Our room was compact, but it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, including:
- TV with Google Chromecast
- Vifa Wireless Speaker
- Tablet with the Proper app that lets you order in-room dining and make various requests; No need to call the reception desk. So perfect for those who don’t like to speak on the phone!
- Minibar with bottled cocktails and water
- Two very comfortable kimono-style bathrobes designed by Kelly Wearstler. You can purchase them at reception. I definitely would have done so if I’d had any extra room in my carry-on!
- Aesop toiletries—one of my favorite skin and body care brands
- Comfortable bed with a luxury Aireloom mattress (handmade in California), hypoallergenic pillows, a down comforter with fine Italian linens. Proper Hotels always strive to provide their guests with the best quality sleep.

- Spacious lobby with tables and chairs, perfect for doing work or lounging and hanging out with friends

Dining
San Francisco Proper hotel has three dining outlets:
Villon — the hotel’s main restaurant, located on the first floor. It looks stunning inside and the food is equally amazing!
Charamille’s — a rooftop bar and lounge. This is a very popular spot in the city, so reservations are highly encouraged. As a guest of the hotel, you can skip the long line outside and be escorted by the staff to get into the bar via an internal lift. It’s a great place to enjoy crafted cocktails and a view of the city.
La Bande — european-style corner cafe serving coffee drinks, wine, beer, and small bites.

We truly enjoyed our stay at San Francisco Proper and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting San Francisco or locals who want to do a fun and relaxing staycation in the city. Can’t wait to be back!
